Sparkbrook no. 1 safety bicycle, c. 1888

From 1888 until 1891 or maybe even 1892 Sparkbrook built safety bicycles with this very interesting frame. There were different models. This no.1, as featured uin the 1888 catalogue, has a rather sophisticated rear band brake. The no.2 had a front wheel spoon brake.
The bike shows many beautiful details, like the chin running inside the frame. And of course there's this very ingenious frame. If you think it looks lightweight you'll be surprised, it's actually very heavy. This model was one of the many experiments when bicycle designers were looking for the perfect bicycle frame. Great to look at!

This Sparkbrook is in the collection of the Velorama museum in Nijmegen. They had just finished the restauration when they allowed me to photograph it. Thanks!
